EIPS welcomes international students for the 2003-2004 school year

September 17, 2003 - Elk Island Public Schools’ (EIPS) International Services is pleased to welcome 182 new and returning international students to the 2003-2004 academic year.

Students arrived throughout the month of August and in early September from China, Korea, Thailand, Japan, Mexico, Brazil, Guatemala, El Salvador, Chile, Germany, and many African nations.

Ranging in age from 10 to 19 years, international students are enrolled in a number of International Services programs such as elementary and junior high full-time academic, English as a Second Language, university entrance, and a seven-month Fast-Track Program.

International students have the opportunity to expand their English language skills, gain new perspectives, develop lasting friendships, and experience success as they prepare for university and college studies, entrance into the workforce, and recreational and travel pursuits.

EIPS’ Fast-Track Program allows international students to apply for entrance into North American universities quicker than ever. Upon successful completion of five 30-level courses including English, Mathematics, Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), Language (other than English), and Humanities or Fine Arts, students may apply to any program offered at the University of Alberta. Students can enter this unique seven-month program in either February or July.

International students attend one of 40 EIPS’ schools and are fully integrated with EIPS’ students in the classroom. In addition to their regular studies, students are encouraged to pursue their interests in the many extracurricular activities that EIPS offers.

"Our community is a lovely place to live and learn. Elk Island Public Schools provides quality education and support services, and has so much to offer to both international students and residents," notes EIPS’ Superintendent, Rob McPhee.

"Students who attend our programs are highly motivated and want the advantage of studying in Canada," adds Karuna Ausman, Director of EIPS’ International Services.

While studying in EIPS, international students stay with local homestay families in the community. Living with local families allows students to thrive in a safe, supportive, English-speaking, family environment. Local families agree to host international students and offer them the opportunity to take part in family functions and routines as a member of the family.

During the 2002-2003 school year, EIPS’ International Services provided programming for 150 full-time and over 200 short-term international students. It is estimated EIPS will have about 190 full-time students, 300 short-term students, and about 400 summer school students in the 2003-2004 school year.
